Preston Development Foundation (PDF-Africa) has successfully completed various projects in the past few years. We have reached out to women in their numbers in various communities.
In line with our primary goal of women having equitable healthcare access, PDF-Africa had a die-in stunt at the Federal Ministry of Health on female gender mutilation (FGM), along with a social media campaign to raise awareness on its harmful effects. It is never enough to give statistics of the number of people who suffer or die because of preventable conditions; we believe that behind every statistical expression is a victim—a girl child who has paid a lifetime price. Therefore, PDF-Africa aimed to educate the public on the dangers of FGM and advocate for stronger legislation to protect girls from this harmful practice.
The ‘Yan Matan Arewa hackathon themed “Girl Force: Unscripted and Unstoppable” was a project done in commemoration of the International Day of the Girl Child in 2019. The hackathon was aimed at bringing together girls from northern Nigeria to explore new ideas, discuss new technologies, share knowledge, and discover best practices to solve certain issues in Nigeria using science and technology. The winners were all gifted prizes along with skill acquisition and internship opportunities. This project operated in line with two of our primary goals: functional literacy for all women and financial inclusion through skill acquisition and empowerment.
As part of our commitment to reducing maternal and neonatal mortality rates, PDF-Africa took proactive steps to mark the 2017 World Breastfeeding Week, observed from August 1st to August 7th. During this period, PDF-Africa focused on supporting and educating mothers and fathers about the benefits of breastfeeding while capturing their perspectives on the challenges and advantages associated with it.
Recognizing the pivotal role of breastfeeding in promoting the optimal well-being and development of infants, PDF-Africa dedicated efforts to advocate for breastfeeding and offer support to expectant and nursing mothers.
PDF-Africa’s outreach efforts extended to Garki and Wuse General Hospitals, where our team engaged with mothers to encourage and empower them to embrace and sustain breastfeeding practices. Through interactive sessions and educational materials, PDF-Africa emphasized the importance of breastfeeding for infant health and maternal well-being.
Step-Up Breastfeeding: Help Mothers Breastfeed (2020)
Building upon our previous efforts in 2017, PDF-Africa continued its steadfast dedication to breastfeeding advocacy during World Breastfeeding Week in 2020. PDF-Africa organized an impactful awareness program at Kobi village, Abuja, to provide comprehensive education to expectant and nursing mothers.
The program focused on enlightening pregnant women about the importance of practicing Exclusive breastfeeding and proper Complimentary feeding. Through engaging workshops and interactive sessions, PDF-Africa equipped mothers with the necessary knowledge and confidence to initiate and sustain breastfeeding, thereby ensuring the optimal health and development of their infants.
The event provided a platform for expectant and nursing mothers to share their experiences with pregnancy and motherhood, fostering an atmosphere of mutual support and understanding. PDF-Africa cherished the opportunity to connect with these women and remains steadfast in its commitment to improving the lives of women through meaningful initiatives.
Step-Up Breastfeeding: Help Mothers Breastfeed (2022)
In 2022, Preston Development Foundation (PDF-Africa) escalated its breastfeeding advocacy efforts by broadening its outreach to various organizations in Abuja. Under the initiative titled ‘Step-Up for Breastfeeding: Help Mothers Breastfeed,’ PDF-Africa embarked on a targeted campaign to advocate for the adoption of supportive policies within workplaces, aimed at facilitating enhanced work engagement and accommodations for breastfeeding mothers.
This initiative was driven by the recognition of the critical role that workplaces play in supporting breastfeeding mothers and promoting maternal and child health. By advocating for the implementation of supportive policies, PDF-Africa aimed to create a conducive environment that enables nursing mothers to continue breastfeeding while balancing their professional responsibilities.
As part of the initiative, PDF-Africa conducted comprehensive training sessions for employers, enlightening them about the numerous benefits of breastfeeding for both mothers and babies. These sessions equipped employers with the knowledge and understanding necessary to establish breastfeeding-friendly policies and practices within their organizations.
Through this multifaceted approach, PDF-Africa sought to foster increased awareness and support for breastfeeding mothers in the workplace, ultimately contributing to the well-being and health of mothers and infants across Abuja. By empowering organizations to prioritize breastfeeding support, PDF-Africa aimed to create a culture of inclusivity and support for nursing mothers, ensuring that they can thrive both personally and professionally.
In commemoration of World Menstrual Hygiene Day, PDF-Africa took action to empower women and girls by providing sanitary pads at the Durunmi Area 1 Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp in Abuja, FCT. The initiative aimed to not only distribute essential hygiene products but also to educate participants on the importance of menstrual hygiene practices, including tips for proper care and the correct use and disposal of sanitary pads, through practical sessions.
Furthermore, participants were introduced to menstrual cups as an alternative and sustainable sanitary product. This inclusive approach ensured that all attendees received both sanitary pads and valuable knowledge on menstrual health management, making the event highly impactful and empowering for all involved.
Pad a Girl (2020 -2024)
In a bid to promote menstrual hygiene management among girls and women, PDF-Africa launched the “Pad A Girl” initiative with a mission that revolves around providing comprehensive education on menstrual health and hygiene management, ensuring that girls and women are equipped with the necessary knowledge and resources to manage their periods confidently. Through interactive workshops, educational sessions, and the distribution of menstrual hygiene products, Pad A Girl ensures that girls and women have the knowledge and resources they need to manage their periods safely and hygienically.
Over the past years, Pad A Girl has made significant strides in fulfilling its mission by positively impacting over a thousand females. Recently, in the year 2023, the PDF-Africa team commemorated World Menstrual Hygiene Day by visiting two government secondary schools in the Garki and Kuje areas of Abuja for the Pad A Girl initiative, where we provided menstrual hygiene education and distributed sanitary pads to the female students. The team also conducted interactive sessions to address any questions or concerns the students had about menstruation. These efforts aimed to empower young girls with knowledge and resources, ensuring that they can manage their periods properly and without interruption to their education.
In 2024, PDF-Africa commemorated the World Menstrual Hygiene Day in collaboration with Give Girls a Chance (GGAC). The partners conducted a three-day menstrual health outreach initiative. The initiative was designed to break down barriers hindering effective menstrual health management thereby creating a period-friendly month. PDF-Africa extended its target audience to the broader community, including boys and men to break the silence, dismantle stereotypes surrounding menstruation, and address the misconceptions and myths that promote stigma, thereby creating a supportive environment where girls feel comfortable discussing their menstrual health openly and seeking help when needed.
The outreach was conducted in three government secondary schools in Abuja – Government Junior Secondary School, Gbessa, Government Secondary School, Apo, Government Junior Secondary School, Durumi, and six communities in Kabusa Ward, Abuja, engaging over one thousand students and community members in comprehensive menstrual health and hygiene management discussions’ engaging boys and men in the conversation to foster understanding and eliminate stigma, and create a supportive environment for open dialogue and menstrual health management.
Through this ongoing initiative, PDF-Africa continues to play a crucial role in improving menstrual hygiene awareness and practices among young females, fostering a healthier and more informed community.
PDF-Africa, alongside other civil society organizations, was trained and engaged by the International Vaccine Access Center (IVAC), in collaboration with Women Advocates for Vaccine Access (WAVA) and Direct Consulting and Logistics (DCL), to champion the introduction of the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine and activate communities within Abuja, Federal Capital Territory. As part of this initiative, PDF-Africa visited the Kabusa ward in the Abuja Municipal Area Council, where our team conducted a series of activities aimed at raising awareness about the HPV vaccine and garnering community support for its uptake. We recognize the vaccine’s critical role in preventing cervical cancer and related diseases and are committed to ensuring that accurate information is disseminated to dispel any myths or misconceptions surrounding the vaccine.
In addition to community engagement, PDF-Africa trained ten vaccine champions from ten settlements within the Kabusa ward. The primary objective of this training was to empower these champions with the knowledge and skills necessary to lead effective awareness, promotion, and acceptance efforts within their respective communities.
PDF-Africa firmly believes that an informed population is better equipped to embrace preventive measures, make informed healthcare decisions, and actively pursue essential healthcare services when needed. This engagement aligns seamlessly with our overarching goal of fostering improved health outcomes within the communities we serve.
Preston Development Foundation (PDF-Africa) is committed to empowering individuals, especially women, young adults and PWDs in Nigeria by focusing on four key objectives that are closely aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
